"Our character is basically a composite of our habits. Habits are a powerful factor in our lives because they express our character and produce our effectiveness. A habit can be defined as the intersection of knowledge (the what to do), skill (how to do it), and desire (the motivations to do it). We need all three to form a habit." Stephen R. Covey This week we had an amazing opportunity to read a summary of the book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey. I have heard of this book numerous times but have not read the book. I was very intrigued by this article, especially how the first 3 habits (Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put things first) help encourage us to have private victories) and the 2nd three habits (Think Win/Win, Seek First to Understand, Synergize) are public victories as we learn to work with others. The last habit, Sharpen the Saw, pulls everything together and helps us to learn to make them effective in all areas of ou...

Finding Your Balance

Image
In this week's reading, many points were brought up about balance, time, boundaries, and priorities.   For each of us in this life, one of the biggest challenges we will have to face will be to find balance. Balance not only in the professional world but balance in life. At different times we will almost feel as though we are at a circus trying to balance on the tight rope, but we had both feet on the rope and were wearing a harness. This might be the time when we are single and living the "life". Life was good and seemed easy and we felt invincible. I remember those days looking back now. But at the time I didn't feel like it was "the dream". I dreamed of family, career, vacations, and being able to do it all, I was invincible and knew I could show the world how it was supposed to be done. Obviously, at the time I had tunnel vision, I could only see what I wanted to see. Now I see my life at times on that same tight rope.  Only this time I am barely holdi...

Hero's Journey

Image
This week we studied a speech called "A Hero's Journey".  According to the speech, a Hero’s Journey means “to live every moment of your life like it matters, because it does. It means to live as if you have an important mission, because you do. It means seeing struggles as adventures, and setbacks as lessons… what matters most isn’t the prize at the end, but how the hero has changed in the process.”  This week’s lesson has once again caused me to do a lot of soul searching and pondering. Especially when I read this line at the end of the speech. “If you resist the hero’s call, you will find that your greatest horror in life isn’t failure, but waking up at fifty or sixty years old and realizing you’ve wasted your life.” Being that I am 45 and have spent my life focusing on and raising my children, I question myself often if I have wasted my life.  In this speech, they have some great questions one should ask themselves. • Did I contribute something meaningful?...

How will you measure your life?

Image
“Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great” ( D&C 64:33 ).      This week we discussed the topic, “How will you measure your life”. It gave me a lot to think and ponder about. In one portion of the lesson, we studied about relationships. I have thought a lot about this over the past few days and have decided this is how I honestly feel that our lives will be measured, by our relationships. There are three main relationships that our lives revolve around that make us who we are, get us to where we want to be, and guide our paths. Those are: 1.        Our relationship with ourselves: As a mom I have learned over the years that I put my children and my husband over myself. I let myself go. I forgot to put myself as a priority. In doing so I have forgotten who I was and forgot my dreams and ambitions. I have also associated my acco...

What I have Learned from my Mentor

Image
When I am at the end of my life, I hope my hands look worn and tired. Why? Because my hopes it will show that I didn't stand by waiting for life to happen. I worked hard to make it happen. I did all that I could to be productive with my days. Not only in my career but in serving and giving a lending hand to others . This week’s study in class we read an article called “The formula and happiness”. In the article, it talked about 3 steps to success from Elder David B. Haight and 3 steps to success from oil tycoon J. Paul Getty . Combining them all together, Jim Ritchie with Launching Leaders, came up with the ultimate steps to success. 1.     Get up early 2.     Work hard 3.     get your education, get trained 4.     find oil: a product, an idea, or a service 5.     make your mark 6.     serve or give back I was really impressed by these steps to success. Mostly because the m...
