Dare to Dream, Dare to Move Forward, Dare to Become

This week we have talked about dreaming and becoming. We all have dreams. Dreams of striking it rich, being famous, or creating the next new fade. But many of us never move past the dream stage and begin to act on those dreams. We fail to believe in our abilities or the realities that those dreams could ever become true.

It goes beyond this, many fail to believe in themselves as a person. The world is ugly and tends to pull the ugly out of us all. Beating us down and telling us we cannot, instead of yes, you can do it. Because of this, we hold ourselves back from becoming who we are meant to be. We are limiting ourselves.

What if the world was different, the opposite of what it is today? What if everyone pointed out the positive, encouraged each other, and lent a helping hand? Do you think we would have as much depression, homelessness, drug abuse, or crime? I don’t think we would. I think we beat ourselves down thinking life is too hard. We compare our weaknesses to other's strengths. It is like comparing chocolate to broccoli, you just can’t do it.

How many of us just go through the motions every day? Same thing day after day. What if we lived an intentional life, a life of purpose, a life of meaning? How much more different would we feel? We need to be proactive, in our actions, choices, and decisions. My father shared this with me this week:

Proactive:

Creating or controlling a situation
by causing something to happen,
rather than responding to it
after it has happened.

After studying and pondering this lesson, I have wondered if I have settled, thinking this is all I have got and all I can become. I believe becoming is a lifelong pursuit. To become truly converted in the gospel, one must be continuously working on becoming like our Savior, Jesus Christ.

“The Final Judgment is not just an evaluation of a sum total of good and evil acts—what we have done. It is an acknowledgment of the final effect of our acts and thoughts—what we have become. It is not enough for anyone just to go through the motions. The commandments, ordinances, and covenants of the gospel are not a list of deposits required to be made in some heavenly account. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a plan that shows us how to become what our Heavenly Father desires us to become.”
Pres. Dallin H Oaks

It is time to rip off the band-aid of comfort and work harder at becoming who my Heavenly Father needs me to be. Who is that? I am not sure yet but although it is hard to leap into the unknown, I am excited to see what the Lord has in store for me and what he sees in me!
