Seeing Things More Clearly

Image
If you had one final lecture to share with a group of students on what you have learned from this course, what would you share? Take this course seriously. Dig deep, really applying what you are reading to your personal life. In doing so you will find out or begin to find out your path and purpose. Treat this class as the beginning of a journey of discovery. What would be your last bit of advice to someone wanting to begin the entrepreneur journey? If you know without a doubt that this journey is the right one for you. I would first find a group of mentors who you trust to be “real”. People who will not be afraid to call you out for what you are doing right and wrong. People who will be honest with you. I would then set a list of priorities in your life. Make a list of “I Will Never’s” and “I Will always” keep it somewhere safe and refer to it frequently. What words of advice, direction, or caution would you give him or her if you had only one chance to give your own last lecture...

Attitude of Gratitude

Image
This week’s readings were on the importance of gratitude. We read a case study of Randy Raykins. During this case study, he reflects on his own strengths and weaknesses. One weakness that he touched on was his ability to appreciate people and really reward them in real-time. He talked about being caught up in his endeavors of beginning a startup company and being so focused on that, that he neglected to see and appreciate the efforts of everyone around him. He commented on how during those early years, "Everything is shifting. And in that shifting environment, you have got to remember to thank people. It is not so easy. I think a good leader is able to reward people at the appropriate times and keep people motivated."       I really feel that the key to life is noticing and appreciating the little things that make our lives better and the people who have impacted our lives. Everyone wants to be appreciated and noticed.      W...

What are a Companies Biggest Assets?

This week we were asked to read the article "What's a Business for?" By Charles Handy. It was an interesting article to read about the ethics and values that large corporations are putting aside to make a larger profit. The biggest questions that kept coming to my mind were "But at who's cost"?  and "How is this going to play out in the long run?"       Many claim that the focus of many of the large corporations has changed from customer service to profits rather than leaving a mark on the work. Shockingly many smaller companies are following suit. The customer is no longer right, the product integrity is being compromised to save a buck or two and the value of its employees has changed to view them as a cost rather than assets. 1.   Why are virtue and integrity so vital to an economy? • Value and integrity create a check and balance for a company. When you forget that, you forget what you stand for and why you started the company in t...

Love/Hate Relationship with Money

Image
"After ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches, if ye seek them; and ye will seek  them for the intent to do good - to clothe the naked, and to feed the hungry, and to liberate the  captive, and administer relief to the sick and the afflicted." Jacob 2:19 What is your attitude toward money? I have a love-hate relationship with money. I am the first to admit I am not good with money. But yes I have gotten better with my views and respect for money over the past few years. How can your view of money affect the way you live? It has been interesting to me to see and learn how much money can affect a marriage. I have always been afraid to tell my husband no, that there was not enough. I felt like by telling him, no that I had not budgeted good enough, or done my part. He worked hard and by telling him no, I felt that I wasn’t letting him gain anything for his efforts. My husband has a good job, gets paid well. We have just had a few years that have been fill...

Dare to Dream, Dare to Move Forward, Dare to Become

Image
This week we have talked about dreaming and becoming. We all have dreams. Dreams of striking it rich, being famous, or creating the next new fade. But many of us never move past the dream stage and begin to act on those dreams. We fail to believe in our abilities or the realities that those dreams could ever become true.       It goes beyond this, many fail to believe in themselves as a person. The world is ugly and tends to pull the ugly out of us all. Beating us down and telling us we cannot, instead of yes, you can do it. Because of this, we hold ourselves back from becoming who we are meant to be. We are limiting ourselves.      What if the world was different, the opposite of what it is today? What if everyone pointed out the positive, encouraged each other, and lent a helping hand? Do you think we would have as much depression, homelessness, drug abuse, or crime? I don’t think we would. I think we beat ourselves down th...

What Type of Leader Will You Become?

Image
"Brothers and sisters, it is destiny to live in a remarkable time. It is a time of turmoil and great wickedness, but also a time of miracles and heavenly blessings. With your future in mind, we have sought to prepare you to become disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ and leaders in our families, in the Church, and in the world around you. President Kim B. Clark This week we studied leadership in my Entrepreneurship class. I am sure I just like many of you who have had their share of varying experiences of being a leader and interacting with a leader. We have all had the so-called leader who was more of a dictator and then those leaders that made an impact on our lives for good. Those are the leaders that we remember their names and most importantly how they made us feel. On the flip side, most of us had had the experience of being the leader. I can’ only speak from my own experience but I have had both negative and positive experiences of being a leader.  Some of those times I...

Overcoming Obstacles

Image
Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great. Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind; and the willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land of Zion in these last days. D&C 64:33–34         This week's readings and videos were all about overcoming obstacles. This was by far my favorite readings so far this semester. Obstacles and trials are things one always wants to avoid at all costs. Who is their right mind looks forward to obstacles and trials? I see them differently. I see them now, more as a molding process as a way to grow, strengthen, and stretch.      Looking forward to life as an Entrepreneur, I have realized that my biggest obstacles for myself and my business are going to be “ME, MYSELF AND I”. If I can overcome my self-doubt, fear, and negative self-talk. Then I believe that will be half the battle. If I ...
